My life group is currently doing Beth Moore’s Bible study, Entrusted. Something that really struck a chord with me is when Beth said, “If we never need rescuing, we’ll never know the Rescuer.” We all think that we can handle everything ourselves, that we don’t need to bother God with our insignificant problems when others have far bigger issues they’re dealing with. But if we never need help, how can we ever truly know the Helper?

Whoa! Mind blown!

That statement made me stop and think of September 2010 when we were facing the possibility of our unborn baby girl having heart complications and maybe even Down Syndrome. God spoke the verse of Jeremiah 29:11 into my heart: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.’” Because of that verse, we named our baby girl Hope. We had hope in the Lord that no matter what, everything would be fine and He’d be with us. I remember being curled up in bed, holding my belly and talking with God. I was crying out to Him to be with us during the unknown for our baby and us as a family.

“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3

I called out to Him. My fellow prayer warriors called out to Him on our behalf. I could feel my Heavenly Father’s Spirit all around me, and keeping me from breaking down. He kept me calm through all the uncertainty. To our wonderment, He answered our prayers and healed our Hope’s heart. Hallelujah! He didn’t just rescue me, He rescued our baby from a lifetime of health issues and doctor visits. He showed us His power and has provided our Hope with a strong testimony of how He loved her and healed her before she was even born.

I’m currently being rescued again. This time from the depths of despair in depression. The sun is shining outside. Birds are still chirping. The leaves are starting to change to beautiful autumn colors. And yet, I feel lethargic with no motivation, whatsoever. I hate that the lows hit me out of the blue and knock me down for a while. I’m so thankful for friends who check on me and show me God’s love by loving me whether I’m having a good day or a not-so-good day. It reminded me of Job’s three friends who came to be with him while he was suffering so much. They didn’t say a word, just showed up for their friend because they cared for him (Job 2:11-13). Just show up for one another. It’s the same way that God shows up for every single one of us. Be there for one another, no matter if everything is sunshine and rainbows or a downpour of emotions.

God is our Rescuer. He puts us in situations or circumstances so that we will fully rely on Him to be our Rescuer. We may think that we can do it all on our own, but that’s the devil lying to us, so that we don’t depend on our Creator. The truth is that, yes, God makes us strong, but it’s only through Him that we are strong. Allow Him to rescue you. While you’re at it, listen to Lauren Daigle’s latest single, “Rescue You”. This song has been a huge blessing to me, I’m sure it will be for you, too.

What do you need to be rescued from today?
